Tuesday, 04 March 2014 12:22

On March 3, Rome hosted the 27th General Chapter of the Salesian Congregations’ opening ceremony dedicated to the topic “Witnesses to the radical approach of the Gospel”.

The Chapter had started actually on February the 22nd, when all the participants, including the Belarusian representative fr. Aleksandr Yasheusky SDB, undertook the pilgrimage to the places connected with John Bosco. After it the participants listened to the reports of General Counsel advisers, responsible for different spheres and regions. The third step of the event was the spiritual preparation to the Chapter.

The program of the opening ceremony was dedicated to Holy Spirit and was headed by the Rector Major fr. Pascual Chávez SDB. In his opening message, the Rector Major, fr. Pascual Chávez, declared: "Our concern is not for the future of the congregation, as if it were a question of survival, but our ability to act as prophets." The first act consisted in the liturgy to invoke the Holy Spirit, so the entire Assembly joined in a prayer to Don Bosco and the Veni Creator Spiritus was sung.

Fr. Chávez then gave the keynote address. He said: "In this Chapter the Congregation is called to renew itself by returning to the freshness of our origins, the missionary zeal of the early years, the dynamism of youth and the holiness of maturity." We are united but "the unity of the congregation does not mean uniformity." Cardinal João Braz de Aviz, Prefect of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, then addressed the Assembly. He took as his starting point the letter of convocation of the Rector Major fr. Chávez which posed the question: "What kind of consecrated life is necessary and relevant in today's world?" The Cardinal summed up his answer in the expression: living the prophecy of communion and fraternity.

Fr. Pascual Chávez gave the report on his twelve years as Rector Major, brining to a conclusion the reports already given by the General Councilors. He described his report as "an overview and, if possible, also a prophetic vision for the future."  The participants watched a movie about their Congreagtion, its evolution and development through time.
