Apostolic Nuncio to Belarus Archbishop Gabor Pinter and Archbishop Metropolitan of Minsk-Mohilov Tadeusz Kondrusievicz took part in the official opening of the cathedral mosque in Minsk.

The event coincided with the official visit of the Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Belarus. He arrived in Minsk on the 11th of November.

Minsk cathedral mosque is a perfect copy of the mosque that was destroyed in Soviet days. The reconstruction of this building took more than 10 years. For the longest time believers prayed in a workmen's shelter which had been repurposed for a sanctuary. The new sanctuary is a single mosque in the Belarusian capital at this date.

The masque was built on the place of previous Tartarian outskirts that is the intersection of streets Ignatenko and Griboedov. The building holds 750 persons. The first service occurred at the beginning of July that was connected with celebration of Ramadan ending.

However the official opening was postponed a number of times as believers waited for Turkish President arrival.

On the 11th of November there were more than 250 guests at the ceremony such as catholic bishops of Belarus, Minsk mayor Andrej Shorets, the minister of culture Boris Svetlov, the minister of information Lilia Ananich, Metropolitan of Minsk and Slutsk Pavel, Islamic patriarchs from regions and others.

The chief mufti in Belarus Abu-Bekir Shabanovich named the sanctuary opening a historical event.

- Certainly it’s a momentous event for both Islamic community and all citizens of Belarus. Moslems appeared on our territory in the 14th century. Our country has always been glorious by religious tolerance, mutual respect between different denominations and nations.

According words of Recep Tayyip Erdogan the mosque in Minsk will become a symbol of friendship between Belarusian and Turkish nations. The Turkish leader concluded that Belarus was a state where people with various ethnic and religious roots lived together beneath the same roof in peace and chime.According tut.by
